Photo of the Week: Empire State Building May 2, 2007
A shot of the Empire State Building from the observation deck at the top of Rockafeller Plaza in New York City. I was there recently for a convention and got quite a few pictures, some of which I'll post in the near future.
You can't see it in this resized image very well, but if you look at this high resolution version the sharpness and detail I got on this shot using the Canon 50mm f/1.4 lens are kind of amazing. It's even more pronounced in the original RAW or .tiff file formats. As usual, see the rest of my Flickr photo stream.

Look at all the color. Usually photos of the NY skyline show a bunch of creme/grey buildings, but I love how the different colors are standing out in this shot.

Nice! Really like the texture the clouds give in the sky. Very organic and completely the opposite of the harsh lines in the city below.
I love that little 50mm. I always carry it with me when I travel. It's so nice to be able to get great detail at 4.0 or 5.6 vs. stopping all the way down to 8.0 like you generally have to do with a zoom.
Also makes it easy to take easy night shots without a tripod when you open that baby up :)

I thought at first you were adding the colors in with photoshop. I was there and I don't remember seeing the colors of the top of the buildings that vividly. That's it, I'm getting lasik and going with Carl Zeiss lenses.

Well, I didn't paint in any color where there was none, but let's just say that one of the magics of Photoshop is that you can enhance colors to bring them out more.
And yeah, the 50mm f/1.4 is great. I had the 50mm f/1.8 and this is a huge step up. It's much sharper.
