On the way back from lunch...

HIM: Isn't there's a correlation between intelligence and how socially graceful people are? So if you're really smart, you don't get along with people well?

ME: No.

HIM: What, you don't think that's true? Why not?

ME: It sounds too much like something stupid people would say just to make themselves feel better.

"Emotional intelligence is distinct from conventional IQ and subserved by an independent brain network, comprising the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (VM), amygdala and insular cortices – subcortical regions also responsible for the way our emotions feel to us when we experience them. That’s according to Reuven Bar-On (Trent University, Canada) and colleagues (University of Iowa, USA), who found that compared with brain-damaged controls, patients with damage to the VM, amygdala or insular regions, had abnormally low emotional intelligence, and difficulty with decision-making and social functioning – all despite exhibiting normal or above-average IQ. By providing further evidence for a distinction between emotional intelligence and IQ, these findings shed light on why some people can seem intellectually intelligent (e.g. reaching the heights of political power, writing best-sellers), and yet seem so socially unintelligent (e.g. ending up in jail for lying)."

"...researchers believe that high levels of EI can help explain why some people with lower IQs are more successful in work and their personal lives than people with significantly higher IQs. In other words, being book-smart won't do you much good if you don't understand your own feelings and can't relate well to other people."
